CWMI Releases The Two Californias

California wine has never been one market. It has simply been presented as one.

The California Wine Market Index™ has released The Two Californias, a new special report examining the economic separation between Napa and the broader California wine-grape market.

Using 26 years of purchased-tonnage and weighted grower-price data, the report asks a straightforward question: How much does the statewide average conceal?

In 2025, Napa represented just 3.9% of California’s purchased wine-grape volume but 26.0% of its calculated purchased value. Its weighted price per ton was 6.7 times the statewide average—and 8.8 times the average for California after Napa was removed.

Those figures do not make Napa representative of California. They demonstrate precisely why it is not.

The Two Californias examines the Napa premium, red-and-white market differences, regional performance and the methodology behind the comparison. Source limitations and calculation methods are disclosed throughout the report.
