The California Wine Market Index™ (CWMI) is supported by ongoing research into California wine-grape production, pricing, agricultural economics, and long-term market behavior. The research program combines publicly available government data with a standardized analytical framework to develop an objective, reproducible benchmark of California’s wine-grape economy.

Historical Data Sources

Primary research is based upon annual California Department of Food and Agriculture (CDFA) Grape Crush Reports. These reports provide verified statewide production volumes, purchased tonnage, weighted average grower prices, and historical production trends spanning multiple decades.

Methodology & Technical Documentation

Technical documentation describes the procedures used to normalize historical data, calculate annual index values, apply weighting methodologies, and maintain consistency across reporting periods. Supporting documentation is being developed as part of the continuing CWMI research program.

Research & Intellectual Property

Future research will expand the CWMI framework to examine regional and varietal market performance, climate and production impacts, market-cycle behavior, and additional analytical applications relevant to California’s wine-grape economy.

Academic and Industry References

Research supporting the California Wine Market Index™ draws upon agricultural economics, commodity index design, statistical analysis, and publicly available industry reports. References are continually expanded as additional historical datasets become available.

Future Research

Future research will expand the CWMI framework to examine regional and varietal market performance, climate and production impacts, market-cycle behavior, predictive modeling, and additional analytical applications for California’s wine-grape economy.
