A forthcoming CWMI paid research report

Before the Report

CWMI is developing a study of California wines commonly described as cult, collectible or investment-grade—and the districts beneath them.

There is no official definition of a cult wine. Reputation, scarcity, allocation, critical recognition and high prices often gather beneath the term, but not always in the same wine or at the same time. We are therefore beginning with a broad field of candidates rather than a predetermined list.

Each wine will be traced to its vineyard and California pricing district whenever its origin can be established. Winery release prices will be separated from retail listings, auction estimates and completed secondary-market transactions. Estate-grown fruit will be distinguished from purchased fruit. A quoted price will not be treated as a completed sale.

Wines will remain in the central analysis only when the available record permits a defensible comparison. Those that cannot be carried forward will not simply disappear; CWMI will explain why they were excluded.

The final report may be considerably smaller than the research behind it. That is intentional. The purpose is not to enlarge the cult-wine category, but to examine what can reasonably be observed between the value of a celebrated bottle and the producing ground beneath its name.

The Price Above the Vineyard will be released as CWMI’s first paid research report. Readers may register below to receive the publication date, final contents and purchase information.

What the Report Will Examine

  • What CWMI means by cult, collectible and investment-tracked wine
  • Cult-wine candidates and their respective California districts
  • District 4 and District 3 grape-market health
  • Winery release prices versus completed resale transactions
  • Whether collectible-bottle value reaches the producing ground
  • What the available record cannot establish
